Some photographs from the workshop-residency I attended in July 2018 at the home of Alfonso Crujera, electro-etching pioneer, master printmaker, painter and sculptor, based on the island of Gran Canaria.Read More
Since December 2018 I have been working with the Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA) Print Studio to set up an electro-etching facility there. Over the last few months we have been sourcing power supplies, cables etc., as well as testing plates and alternative resists. There has been quite a lot of interest in the technique from print studio members who have seen me with many pieces of odd-looking equipment, as well as the test plates I have been printing. I have also carried out staff training so that more printmakers can begin to access the setup.
We now have a small-scale improvised active electro-etching tank in the acid room, with a passive etching tray beside it. This equipment is starting to be used for public classes, which is really exciting.
I designed and ran the first public weekend session with the electro-etching equipment on Saturday 18th to Sunday 19th May 2019. I had a great time teaching all of the printmakers over both days, and hope to run some more classes very soon. Many thanks to all who came along - you worked very hard and got some great results!
I hope that electro-etching at the DCA will continue to grow over the next few months as more printmakers join my classes, and as we carry out more print experiments. I believe there will be a great deal of interest from the wider Scottish printmaking community in this fascinating medium.
