This design evolved from a partially formed piece. I engraved over the uneven interior to create a soft, reflective surface, mimicking the veining and undulations of a wild rose petal.

I studied climbing roses and discovered that their thorns curve sharply downwards in order to use other plants to support their growth. I was inspired by this contrast between the soft, beautiful flower and the shrewdness of the plant's tactics. Perhaps there is a parallel between the climbing rose and ourselves in this piece - what do we choose to reveal of ourselves and our motives in making our way to the top?

The thorns and stems flicker black and white, while a swirling pattern of bare winter branches spirals around the base. Turning the bowl upside down it seems as if you are looking through and beyond the hedgerow, into the rotating spheres of the cosmos.
